Rituals
A ritual that I deeply believe in is the Jamaican custom of devotion. It is traditionally practiced before an event, to start the day, or whenever a boost of confidence is needed. While living in Jamaica, my children’s entire school practiced devotion every single morning. This tradition shares deep roots with the SMC granny midwife tradition, showing the deep African roots across the diaspora. I believe the combination of the practice of devotion with my love for meditation will create a meaningful ritual for both my future clients and my own everyday life.
Rhythm: A simple, meditative rhythm or chime is introduced to signal that the ritual of devotion has begun.
Inspiration: Based on our current focus or the week’s discussions, something loving, positive, inspiring, motivational, and uplifting is shared by me.
Prayer: A grounding prayer is offered to align the heart and mind, invite courage in spirit, and ward off negativity. The prayer concludes with giving thanks for all that is and will be, while asking for the serenity to accept what cannot be changed and the courage to change what can.
Song: We sing a spiritual song together, preferably the client’s personal favorite.
Meditation and Breath: The ritual closes in quiet meditation with deep breathing for five minutes—or however long the client needs to gently process their emotions and return to the present.
Nourishment: The practice ends with warm tea or fresh water to refresh and ground the body.
