Birth Stories

Truth is I have a very big family and I have been around many babies but I have never experienced a birth other than my own. As a result this birth story will be a story about my own experience of giving birth. Although I have 4 kids I would like to tell you the story about my first experience with my son Nash. This was the day I found out what wombmanhood really was. I gave birth to him at a maternity center in Miami with my midwife who was in her 70’s at the time. It was an amazing experience. I arrived at the birthing center only 2 centimeters dilated and was welcomed with open arms. I had the support of my mother who flew into town, my sister Melissa, cousin Jannel and my wonderful husband Andrew. My labor was for 14 hours and I went through many emotions. I have never experienced pain like that before but I felt safe because I was with the ones I love most. Unfortunately during the height of it I told my mother to leave the room because she looked like she was in more pain than me. I could see that watching me in such pain was really hurting her and seeing her like that was hurting my heart. I loved that my husband was on the bed with me the whole time. Without him there I feel like I would still be in labor. He held me through the whole birth . My midwife was like a ninja. It was almost like she was there but then she wasn’t at the same time. She was in the shadows and came whenever I needed her. For some reason I wanted everyone silent but me with no music, no food and no talking. I didn’t want to walk around or anything. We briefly tried walking, taking a bath, and bouncing on the ball but I preferred to lay on my back with silence all around me. All I heard was the heavy rain outside. I love rainy weather, it’s calming to me. I now find it funny thinking about how everyone tiptoed around the room. When it was finally time to push some of the blood vessels in my eyes popped because I was pushing wrong. I went to birthing classes so I’m not sure how I got that confused. Finally the midwife told me, I made the correction and out popped Nash. It was at that moment I felt like a woman, both mentally and physically. It’s like a switch flipped in my mind. My first words after the baby came out as I cried was “myyy babbbbbyyy.” I often say to pregnant women push as though you are taking the biggest poop of your life. It’s amazing to me how the pain fades almost immediately once the baby comes out. The relief is like night and day. Then the placenta shows up.

Hey Nardia, I just wanted to thank you for sharing such a vulnerable and sacred story. It made me tear up and laugh, you are a great storyteller. So cool you got an elder midwife also, that is a blessing. That is so heartwarming that you and your mother share that bond; and equally as respectable that you know your boundaries and are able to communicate them to her freely and to be respected in your choices. When you said “without him there I feel like I would still be in labor” I laughed so hard!!! So funny that you had everyone tiptoeing around you – GOOD FOR YOU. If I was more unapologetic I would have it the exact same way, because why do I hear you talking????? Lastly, I feel the same way in that adrenaline and emotional rush that came over you when you birthed your baby…. I was hollering and screaming “my babbyyyyyyy, I did ittttttt” also… I think that may be why I started hemorrhaging. I was so in shock that I actually birthed her and had her on earth now. Before having a baby I also didn’t truly feel like a woman and the past two years I have been stepping into that. I could really relate to your story and thank you so much for sharing.

I am so glad you felt safe enough to go through the pains and birth your child freely. You deserve that. Bless you.
