Mother Blessings

Assignment 1: A Unique Approach to the Mother Shower Blessing

My unique approach to a Mother Shower Blessing would be centered around nature, nurturing, grounding, and speaking life over the mother.

If the mother enjoys being in nature and the weather permits, I would love to create an outdoor Mother Shower Blessing. I would choose a peaceful natural setting where she could relax, breathe, and feel connected to the earth and the people surrounding her.

The song I would choose for the blessing is “Grandmother Song” by Sheffy Oren Bach. I would use this song because it speaks life over the mother and creates a feeling of connection to the women and generations who came before her. I want the mother to feel that she is standing on the strength, wisdom, and love of those who came before her.

One of the most unique parts of the blessing would be a herbal and rose water bathing ceremony. As mom is in her swimsuit she would be gently bathed or anointed with herbs and rose water while words of love, encouragement, and blessings are spoken over her. This would be a time to honor her body and the transition she is experiencing as she prepares to welcome her baby.

I would also have the mom choose the foods she enjoys and make the meal a special part of the gathering. This time would be about nourishing her and allowing her to be cared for instead of always being the one caring for everyone else.

We would spend time doing breathing exercises together, helping her slow down, become present, and connect with her body. I would guide her through grounding exercises in nature, such as feeling her feet connected to the earth, listening to the sounds around her, noticing the trees and plants, and taking intentional breaths.

Throughout the blessing, the women gathered would speak life over her. They could share affirmations, prayers, words of wisdom, or personal blessings for her journey.

Assignment 2: Carrying Out a Successful Mother Shower Blessing

If I were working with a mother who moved to my city at eight months pregnant without her partner, family, or friends, my first step would be to meet with her and get to know her. I would like to understand how she is feeling about being in a new city, what concerns she may have about giving birth without her familiar support system, and what she would like her postpartum experience to look like.

I would ask her about her culture, traditions, food, family, and the things that make her feel supported and cared for. I would also ask what type of support she feels she needs after the baby arrives. This would allow me to create a Mother Shower Blessing that is centered around her.

As her Full Circle Doula, I would also be intentional about helping her build a village. With her permission, I would invite women from her neighborhood, workplace, community, or other connections she has made since moving to the city. The purpose would be to introduce her to women who could become part of her support system.

During the Mother Shower Blessing, I would create a Community Support Tree. She would be at the center of the tree, and each woman attending would have an opportunity to identify what type of support she is able and willing to provide.

The women could write things such as:

    • Preparing or bringing meals

    • Checking in by phone or text

    • Visiting after the baby arrives

    • Helping with errands

    • Providing transportation

    • Helping with household tasks

    • Sitting with the mother while she rests

    • Helping with older children

    • Offering emotional support

    • Connecting her to community resources

    • Simply being someone she can call when she needs a listening ear

I would encourage the women to be specific about the support they can offer. Instead of saying, “Call me if you need anything,” they could choose specific days or times when they are available. This would give the mother a more realistic picture of the village being created around her.

As her Full Circle Doula, I would be one of the people providing direct postpartum care and helping her navigate the transition. I would also use the support tree as a way to identify where additional support may be needed and help connect her with appropriate community resources.

I would follow up with the mother after the blessing and make sure she has the contact information for the women who offered support.

For me, a successful Mother Shower Blessing is not just about creating a beautiful day for the mother. It is about helping her leave knowing that she has people around her. When her family cannot be there physically, we can help create a village that surrounds her with love, practical support, and community.
