I’d like to share the birth story of my mom, Aimee, who at the age of 21 gave birth for the very first time to a set of twin girls, me and my sister. My mom recounts her first pregnancy with great fondness saying she would do it all over again, as well as the huge shock she felt when finding out she was having twins. My mom shares that back home in Mexico, she had her mom, aunties and village to look after her, to teach her about her pregnancy and what to expect. She indulged in cravings for fruit and overall felt great until the last trimester. When it came time for delivery, she had to deliver through C-section which was difficult, but having her mother and family caring for her made the difference. 10 years later, my mom was pregnant with my little sister here in Washington state and gave birth in the cold month of November, and while we were all so excited to be welcoming our baby sister, my mom suffered from a very deep post-partum depression after delivering her baby via c-section. She did not have her mom, her sisters or anyone that could help her and mother her. At 10 years old, her distance and sadness did not make sense to me. I thought she would feel happy to meet my baby sister, but for the first several hours after giving birth, my mom couldn’t even look at her baby. Her birthing and post-partum experience(s) have fueled my desire to want to help be a part of the village that women need during the vulnerable and deeply transformative time that is childbirth, especially as they navigate not only giving birth but navigating the complexity of western medical institutions, racism, language barriers, isolation and lack of community.
