Saving Lives

Cultural competent health care providers and birth can save lives.  There are numerous styles of teaching cultural competency.  After researching the different curricula adopted the cultural competency curriculum was designed by the community Pediatric Program at Columbia University Medical Center.

How does it work? It works by knowing and practicing the five cultural competencies from Columbia Medical School Pediatric Cirrulcum.

A Culturally and racially diverse workforce gives healthcare consumers a broader range of healthcare providers to choose from.   And a culturally inclusive institution attracts a wide range of employees and retains them.   And this is a critical component for customer satisfaction, better birth outcomes, and managing company resources.

Diversity in America

The face of America is diverse.  There are different colors, languages, and national origins.  The people represent all races, ethnicities, religions, immigration statuses, sexual preferences, and cultures.  By 2020, half the nation’s children will be of color.  With these facts, I spoke of the need to prepare for the future.

Let’s get ready by creating systems that support cultural inclusivity to meet the perinatal needs of varied clients.

Steps to a Culturally Inclusive Workplace

  • Observe health literacy in the workplace
  • Host yearly cultural competency training
  • Diversify the leadership
  • Retain 51% of employees of color
  • Support cultural expression
  • Include all staff in strategic planning
  • Discourage cultural appropriation
  • Prevent employee isolation
  • Establish a greeting protocol

Commitment to Cultural Inclusivity

The commitment to cultural inclusivity must come from the top down.  This will end silos.  The commitment comes from the owner, the investors, and the board chairs.  The leaders will have to measure their workplace inclusivity.   This is how we will ensure, that we all grow and thrive.
