Hi, my name is Brenda Gonzalez, my birthplace is Nayarit, Mexico. I decided to train with SMC because I believe everyone deserves a dignified birth and I believe there is a role I can play to help improve maternal and child health outcomes. I am called to this group specifically because of the holistic and culturally competent approach that addresses barriers to health disproportionately impacting Black women and women of color. Not all birth experiences are the same, many women do not have the access to resources that allow them to experience a healthy and dignified birth experience and I value that this course exists to equip people with the tools to help improve birth outcomes for women. I’d like to leave this course feeling equipped with the knowledge of what the role of a doula is, to feel empowered to get involved here in King County, Washington through child & maternal health & public health work. I am excited to see what this course will open up for me! While I am not a mother myself, I am an older sister, caretaker and auntie.
