In Illinois, infant mortality rates varied significantly by race in 2018. The overall infant mortality rate in Illinois was 6.5 deaths per 1,000 live births. However, Black infants had the highest infant mortality rate at 13.7 deaths per 1,000 live births. Hispanic infants had a rate of 5.3, while White infants had a rate of 5.0, and infants classified as other races had a rate of 3.9 deaths per 1,000 live births. These statistics show a significant racial disparity in infant mortality in Illinois. In particular, the mortality rate for Black infants was about 2.7 times higher than the rate for White infants. This difference demonstrates that racial disparities in infant health were a serious issue in Illinois during 2018.

Reading the numbers from state to state is so disheartening. Yet no one is being held accountable.
