I went out on a limb for this assignment and asked an employee at a salad shop if I could ask him about the role of a doula. He was willing and had never heard of the word doula. He actually thought it was someone who babysat or cared for others, which isn’t too far off at all. I explained about the role, maternal mortality and infant mortality rates and how a doula can help navigate the hospital system and support the mother to achieve the type of birth that she desires. We discussed how a lot of mothers don’t know what a doula does or that they have the right to have one, and that awareness, education and accessibility for all people is really important.

We talked about the granny midwife, and how the modern medical system tried to eradicate and ostracize the lay-midwife community by blaming maternal and infant deaths on them. We talked about how systematic racism plays a huge role in all of this, and how doulas can help bridge that gap so mothers aren’t dismissed, neglected or ignored. Overall this was a great assignment to spread the word about what a doula can do for women and their families, and I definitely stepped outside of my comfort zone to do so.

I’m proud of you for getting out of your comfort zone because a lot of time in order to grow that’s what we need to do but also I’m proud of you for being brave enough to approach and effectively communicate the role of a doula to the guy that had no idea what a doula was. I hope he takes the information and pass it to those In need!

Thank you for seeing me! I agree it is important especially if we are going to do this work professionally it’s so important to be confident and well versed in what we do and how we can serve in communities and make an impact.

Jocelyn what a brilliant idea to go out of you own circle! A salad shop, how fun. It’s such a blessed feeling knowing I learned alongside people so dedicated!
