I would speak with the client in a calm private space at home and ask her open-ended questions like, “How are you feeling about nursing?” or “How do your breasts feel when the baby latches on?” I would listen carefully and keep my tone warm, supportive and non judgemental. While mom is breast feeding, I would observe and keep mental or written notes.

It is important to make sure mom gets the evidence based material she needs so with my guidance I would also share written guides on how to latch the baby correctly and how to spot hunger signs. Give her contact details for local breastfeeding specialists and community food programs like WIC.

In this situation I will help my clients by cooking nourishing meals that help her body heal and make milk. Take care of household tasks to lower her stress, offer gentle nursing tips based on my training and experience as a breastfeeding mom.

If needed I would assist her in reaching out to a lactation specialist, her doctor or the baby’s doctor right away. Especially if I see that the baby is not gaining enough weight or shows signs of needing immediate medical care. If it’s not an emergency a lactation specialist is definitely my first choice.

Good job Nardia, I like that you mentioned the importance of nourishing the mom. I was blown away to learn that the body needs more calories to feed a baby than to make one!
