Shafia Monroe is a Master of Public Health, renowned midwife, doula trainer, influencer, and motivational speaker. . . . She is the founder of International Center Traditional Childbearing (ICTC), now the National Association to Advanced Black Birth (NAABB), that uplifted Black midwifery, and challenged systemic racism in the midwifery profession. She is president of Shafia Monroe Consulting/Birthing CHANGE and the SMC Full Circle Doula Birth Companion Training, LLC program. She has trained over 3,000 doulas world-wide to empower families to practice African American birth and postpartum traditions, improve birth outcomes, and have joyful birth and postpartum experiences. In 2011 she led the Oregon Coalition to Improve Birth Outcomes (OCIBO) to create the legislative concept HB3311, to investigate the use of doulas to improve birth outcomes for families insured by Medicaid. Her work resulted in Oregon being the first state in the nation to cover doula services for Medicaid insured families. Monroe’s has received numerous awards for her work, including four life-time achievement awards. She was featured in Scientific American (June 2022) as one of four change makers who are bringing equity to healthcare.
Monroe is a wife, mother of seven, and has ten grandchildren, and two great-grandchildren. In her spare time, she enjoys cooking for family and friends, growing herbs, reading, and walking. She is currently writing her memoirs as a Black midwife and a foodie.
